When he was a little boy, he always sat alone on the ridge of the field, watching the color of wild flowers in the sunshine and the clouds moving in the sky. This sensitivity to the colors of nature became the foundation of his lifelong creation.
When he was 16, Van Gogh started working at Goupil & Cie, the largest art dealer in Europe. Here, he realized that art is a way to touch the world. But his sincerity and stubbornness did not fit in with the sophistication of the business world. He was fired at the age of 23.
Later, he worked as a village teacher and a missionary in the mining area. In the Borinage mining area in Belgium, he gave his food and clothes to the miners, trying to comfort people in hardship with faith. But the church expelled him for "being improper". That was the darkest time in his life, and also the time when he picked up a paintbrush -- since words and faith could not convey warmth, he would use colors to keep the world he saw.
In 1880, Van Gogh began to learn painting formally. He didnt go to an art school, but copied Millets sketches in the library, and painted women carrying coal baskets on the street, or workers resting by the road. His brushstrokes were full of empathy for ordinary lives. After he went to Paris in 1886, the light and shadow of Impressionism completely awakened his sense of color. He gave up the dark colors, and began to express warm emotions with cobalt blue, orange red and bright yellow.
In 1888, the sunshine in Arles sparked his creative peak. Sunflowers and Starry Night Over the Rhône were both created here. But mental illness always troubled him. In 1889, he was admitted to a mental hospital, but he still painted the irises outside the ward and the olive trees on the hillside, keeping the brightness with trembling lines.
In July 1890, 37-year-old Van Gogh ended his life in the wheat field of Auvers. He left more than 800 oil paintings and more than 1,000 sketches, which were understood by the world only after his death. There are never perfect landscapes in his paintings, only light made from suffering, and life that grows warmly forever.
Stick to the things you love, and you will be noticed eventually.
